Panne velvet can be used for all kinds of outerwear as well as carnival costumes. Panne velvet is also great for decorating and interior design: the material can cover larger areas like walls and booths at trade fairs. Panne velvet is usually made from polyester. It is knitted, not woven which makes it elastic. Its shiny finish comes from pressing and ironing the pile. It is a softly and flowingly falling material.
Panne velvet can be machine washed at low temperatures and should be ironed on the inside. Do not tumble dry, it is better to let panne velvet dry on a hanger.
Working with panne velvet is not difficult. It is important to use an anti-slip underlay like a cotton or linen cloth. Also you should always cut panne velvet with the grain. Our sewing advice: for easier handling, place the pins at right angle to the seam and just sew over them! You should preferably use a stretch needle with a size of 70 or 80, polyester thread, and a stitch length of 2.5 mm.
